I was supposed to come home and write job applications. Instead I drank rum and cokes and watched a lot of this little guy. devreux and I love you, but there's a whole world to explore, and I'm sure Mom is tired of bringing you food -- your sibling is gone; you should fledge, already! :)

Anybody else looking for Perseids tonight?

Yes I should post this to FB instead but I'm logged in here and not there, and I'm too lazy to change it.

You know, reading through some of my older posts, there's some fun and interesting stuff in there. Maybe I should revive some of that.

No, not just SCA camping. :)

To start with, however, Pennsic was okay; mostly forgettable. That was kind of the point, I was really hoping to have little to do besides relax, read, write, and party a bit, and then of course have the I Genesii performance. Unfortunately, for various reasons, I never really got into the right mindset and mostly failed at all of it, though the show seems to have been quite a hit (thanks for the hand, fauvel!), and doing cameos with other troupes is always entertaining. So, for this year, theater = good, everything else = meh.

Since we left on Tuesday, though, and gorgeous weather the rest of the week, we took the opportunity to go mundanely camping this past weekend at Ryerson Station, which is almost to the very southwestern corner of PA. It's small but with a variety of ecosystems -- forest, meadow, marsh -- with wildlife to match. We saw a number of interesting dragonflies (my google fu is failing at the moment; one was almost all red with black wings, another had black wings with white dots at the tips). The weekend's bird sightings included a pileated woodpecker and indigo bunting (!) and about a gazillion goldfinches. Owls were heard surprisingly early, and there was somebody out there who kept making singular hoots all day.

So, camping. And now unpacking from both trips. And wondering if we really should make, say, an 8x8 wall tent for taking to state parks. :)

After spending a little time on the Final Fantasy wiki, I realized another reason why I don't like VII as much as most of the others. People couldn't follow VIII or XII, but VII just makes no darn sense to me whatsoever even after reading the plot synopsis. If IX is simplistic, give me that any day, because IX at least seems like something that was remotely thought out from beginning to end.

1. Know before you go -- alternately: patience, patience, patience (NOT produce, produce, produce)
2. Everyone has something to learn, and everyone has something to teach.
3. Anything can be a transition.

Be awesome.

No one is stopping you. There is an unlimited supply of awesome, but it's not free. The only way you get it is by working for it and succeeding. Go to practice. Go to events. Read. Learn. Teach. Kick ass. Be nice to other people. Fix your problems with good grace. Help other people fix their problem, also with good grace. Don't listen to your own press. Serve other people. Serve your Crown and Kingdom. Speak up when you see an injustice. Know when to shut up. Have fun. Be open to inspiration. Don't be a dick. Use your powers for good.

This is one of the best things I've read on an e-mail list in a long time. Just because it was written with regards to SCA fencing does not mean it cannot apply, well, just about everywhere -- outside fencing, even outside the SCA. It deserves to be spread to other forums.

I wonder if I'm just too methodical to be any good at melee. Oh, and I need a new fencing userpic.

For those of you starting to plan your Pennsic activities, the most important of all takes place in the Performing Arts tent, Monday the 8th, at 9pm, as I Genesii proudly presents "The Measure of a Man"!

For those who might be interested in such things, I Genesii will be attempting some sort of brief performance/q&a/autograph session/what-have-you during the Artisan's Playtime in the barn Saturday from 11-1 at War Practice!

The presence or lack of killer instinct in a game or simulation does not automatically confer a presence or lack of killer instinct in a true life-or-death situation.

(In other words, you don't REALLY know what you -- or anyone else -- can do until the chips are REALLY down.)

Stepmania > DDR.

SM has a huge library of songs, including pretty much everything from every DDR game ever released, and one's personal library can be changed to one's heart's content. All our favorite DDR songs in one set and none of the crappy 300-bpm 10-plus-footers!

A $20 adapter lets us use our PS2 pads with the Linux box hooked up to the TV perfectly, and we only need that because our pads don't already have USB adapters.

And though I intend to donate, the software's all free. ^_^

I've been getting my retro on, going through Final Fantasy IX with devreux. It's really my favorite FF, alongside VI. I was thinking about other games from around that period, weighing some merits of another playthrough. Chrono Cross is beautiful, but I played through that a couple times back in the day, and I STILL don't understand a lot of what was going on there. People complain that Xenogears was confusing, but at least you had a reasonable idea of what was going on there, even if some details were fuzzy.

I think I'm the only person in the world who got sick of FFX and has no intention of going back to it. Maybe I should pick up XII cheap somewhere and give that a shot.

If I had a radio show (hmm, derrangedferret?), I would play nothing but Led Zepplin today in honor of Pens goalie Brent Johnson's (noted Zep fan) total annihilation of Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro.

From the broadcast (the look on Fleury's face is priceless):

From a fan's video camera (even the players on the ice turn to watch):
